Emergency Preparedness

Who’s watched the movie “Cival War” on Amazon Prime? I got the chance to watch the movie last weekend and admittedly I did not like it. I would start by asking the question “Is it really possible?” Maybe I’m naive. It was difficult to follow who were the good guys and who were the bad and the fighting and killing was just too much in my opinion. After the movie was over I had more questions than I cared to have watching a movie. But, I did have a moment thinking about what would we need if we ever had an emergency or worse yet a war of any kind.

I compiled a list of things I believe are essential items to have in my home (a few which I do own) in case of any emergency.

I think that one of the first things we would need to have (and I do own) is a Berkey Water Filter System. I love having this system because I feel so much more comfortable drinking clean water. I have the large version which has an ample storage of water for a few days if we weren’t to have clean running tap water. It was an investment but I still feel it is so worth it whether or not we’re in an emergency situation.

The second item(s) I think we should have in our preparedness arsenal is enough food for at least a month without the need of going out to a grocery store. When I’m recommending at least 3-4 weeks of food at home I mean per person and per pet in your household. Speaking of pets, on my house my cats would argue that they command food and attention at all times and should get it. They are always hungry and they are vocal about it. I try not to have extra food for them all the time, though it does happen, because they can get a little destructive. *sigh

Not many of us can live without electricity. Sure short term no problem but when it goes longer than a day I’d day we start to panic. We use the utility to power just about everything. I for one can turn candles on at night but I would be hard pressed to say that if I couldn’t charge my phone/ iPad for an extended period or have the fridge and freezer powered. That’s why having a solar power generator is uber important. I asked around for recommendations and one that I’ve been told works great for powering needed items like a refrigerator, our phones and laptops/ipads and small appliances is the EcoFlow Delta.

EcoFlow Portable Power Station with Solar Panels

This is a solar generator that is portable and doesn’t need electricity to function. You can charge it from your car (very slowly) if in a real pinch.Another must have would be some type of heat source whether it’s for cooking or keeping warm. If it’s nice outside that may be an outdoor grill or fire pit. If it’s the middle of winter that may be an indoor propane stove. I like the dual propane and butane stove because you have two sources of fuel to operate it. Either of these options do not rely on electricity and are great for indoors in case it’s cold outside. They’re also great as added padding to proper preparedness.

Finally, having your vice for those more than challenging moments is deserving of a mention. I have a bottle (or two) of wine handy at all times. You might look to storing a bottle of a favorite spirit, coffee, or tea that can help calm you down when the going gets tough.

And if you watched the movie I would definitely be one of the people out in the country probably in total disbelief of our situation.
